June is Adopt-A-Shelter-Cat Month and Petfinder is celebrating in a BIG way!
My pal, Jane (Petfinder blogger extraordinaire), just told me about Petfinder’s super-fun program called “The Whiskers” —a playful homage to the Academy Awards. Basically, Petfinder is raising awareness of the hundreds of thousands of adoptable cats out there by having shelters and rescues submit photos of adoptable cats. The idea is that these cats not only deserve a home, they also deserve an award.
Here’s a little more about the program:
Celebrate the The Whiskers Awards
From June 1 to June 21, cat lovers everywhere will be able to vote for their favorite photo in five “CAT-egories” by visiting www.petfinder.com/thewhiskers.
“The idea behind The Whiskers is to raise awareness of the more than 125,000 homeless cats on Petfinder.com right now, who are often overlooked in shelters and rescue groups,” said Betsy Saul, the co-founder of Petfinder.com. “With this fun, online photo contest, we will be giving these adorable, adoptable cats the opportunity to take center stage.”
The “CAT-egories” for The Whiskers include:
- Best Newcomer: While few will admit there is any kitten in this world who isn’t amazing, this CATegory is for the most adorable, itty-bitty adoptable kitty around.
- Best On-Screen Duo: Some adoptable cats and kittens would prefer to be adopted with their brother or sister. Others just could not part with them to take their Petfinder.com photo. This CATegory is for these precious pairs.
- Best Picture: Some cats and kittens are clearly a paw above the rest. This CAT-egory is for the cats or kittens who give good face or have mastered the art of the pose.
- Cattyist: Perhaps you know an adoptable cat or kitten who has diva tendencies or demands attention. For them, this CAT-egory is the cat’s meow.
- Best Comedic Performance: This CAT-egory celebrates the adoptable cat or kitten with the most hilarious purr-sonality. For this award, Petfinder.com formed a special partnership with the popular website, ICanHasCheezburger.com. In addition to voting for their favorite feline, LOLCats fans can also caption photos of the cats nominated for “Best Comedic Performance” on ICanHasCheezburger.com.
Petfinder.com will announce the winner of each CAT-egory on June 30 to conclude Adopt-A-Shelter-Cat Month. The five shelters with winning photos in The Whiskers will receive hide-perch-and-go boxes, which give cats control over their environment, reduce stress and help them adapt to their new surroundings.
