Pitbull ChristmasAs part of our continuing efforts to improve the welfare of pit bulls in the Richmond area, Gracie’s Guardians, an initiative of the Richmond Animal League, is offering Christmas “presents” to some of our area’s needy pit bulls to help them enjoy a happy holiday season. We will be giving away free dog food, collars, leashes, vaccines (not including rabies), treats and coupons for a free spay or neuter to pit bulls and their owners that reside in the 23224 zip code.

This initiative is part of our ongoing endeavor to forge positive bonds with communities in which pit bulls may be at heightened risk for abuse, neglect or dog fighting. Nationwide programs driven by the Humane Society of the United States, from which ours was modeled, have proven that building healthy and productive bonds with individual communities increases the awareness of the plight of pit bulls and promote their well being. We have previously targeted this area for a number of free training classes to create opportunities for constructive interactions between owner and pit bull as an alternative to dog fighting or abuse.

Individuals wishing to receive these benefits must register by calling 804-980-0436 and must have a pit bull or pit bull mix and provide proof of residency in the 23224 zip code.

This sounds like such a fantastic program! I’m not even sure if Chicago has anything like this…but it does sound like a great way to raise awareness in the communities.
