Meet a Pet Lover: Cristina Del Bueno

by Sarah on October 7, 2011 · 0 comments

TGIF, Pet Lovers! It’s (finally) Friday, and you know what that means – it’s time to Meet a Pet Lover.  This week, I am pleased to introduce Cristina Del Bueno and her lab puppy, Thora.

You may recognize Cristina from her blog Home Slice, where she shares her thoughts “on motherhood, owning a business & courting insanity.” You can read her post about Thora’s homecoming here (warning: be prepared to tear up a little at her daughters’ remarks about losing a pet and learning to love a new one).

ThoraPet’s name/age: Thora, around 2 years old

How did Thora come to live with you? After our 15 year old dog Delilah passed away in July of 2009, we visited the Richmond SPCA for some dog love.  The girls fell in love with Thora, and she came home with us that day.

Does Thora have a nickname? Yes, unfortunately.  It’s Thora the Destroyer.  Or the Thoranator 3000.  She’s a puppy, and a lab, so the nicknames fit.

Does anyone (including yourself) have an awesome trick? Heh.  No.  But she’s learning to finally sit and stay; it’s been a process.  Actually, she does have a trick.  She can eat a bowl of dog food in less than 5 seconds, swallowing it whole.

What’s the best thing about having a rescue dog? She’s the second rescue dog I’ve had, and both times, it’s like they’ve known they have a second lease on life.  She loves with extreme passion and nothing makes her happier than being with us.  Because she came into my life during a divorce and a lot of sadness, we’re probably over-bonded, but we both ended up rescuing each other.

Do you know anything about Thora’s life before she ended up at the Richmond SPCA? I don’t, unfortunately.  I know that she was picked up as a stray in Chesterfield County.  I have worked with both the SPCA on obedience and other issues – it is obvious that she suffers from a severe case of separation anxiety.  She also cannot stand being crated (one of my favorite Thora-isms comes from our first attempt at crating – using a steel crate.  She chewed her way out of it, breaking a canine in the process).  We don’t know if this is from the trauma of being separated from her family or something that happened before then.  She is also incredibly excited about her food though she wasn’t underweight when we got her.  It’s possible she’s just a typical Labrador – meaning she’s ½ piglet.

Where are other Pet Lovers most likely to spot you and the gang (cafe, dog park, etc.)? I run a lot, and Thora is usually with me.

What do your pets know about you that no one else does? That would be giving away all my secrets.  She would probably tell you I snored very loudly.

What is your “can’t live without it” pet product? Two things – the Furminator, because she sheds like a maniac and it helps cut down on excess hair, and her harness, which enables me to run without her dragging me into traffic after a squirrel/other dog/leaf/food.

Jackie Small is a new recruit to the Canine Adventure team, and she’s wasted no time jumping in and getting her feet wet right along with her canine clients.

Another satisfied customer! Graybee (available for adoption at Richmond Animal Care & Control) had a blast on her Adventure Walk at Belle Isle.

Pets’ name/age/species:
Morgan Louise Beatrice Morganstern/5 years old/Rottweiler Lab Mix

How did your pets come to live with you?
I was initally fostering Morgan. She was an excitable large, black dog who just didn’t show well in the kennels at RACC, so we were thinking being out of the shelter, getting some exercise and stimulation might make her more adoptable. I don’t really know who I was kidding when I was acting like I could bring a dog home and not want it to be my buddy for life.

Do any of your pets have an awesome trick? Do you?
Morgan’s most popular trick isn’t even really a trick. She wasn’t vocal at all when I got her, but I love it when she howls, so when a fire truck went by and she howled, which was very rare for the first year or so, I’d give her big time praise because I thought it was adorable. So, now she howls when she’s excited about something. If we walk from the living room to the kitchen and she things she might get a treat, she howls. When friends arrive at our house, before they greet her, she howls them a little song. It’s precious.

What are your pets’ worst habits?
Morgan’s worst habit is another thing that I, of course, think is adorable. She makes a lot of my friends and visitors to the house uncomfortable because if they’re sitting on one of the benches we have at our kitchen table, and the back of their pants don’t come up high enough, she will totally stick her nose down the back of their pants to get in a little sniff. She’ll do the same thing to get a sniff of a belly button if there’s a short shirt in the room.

Pool (available for adoption at the Richmond Animal League) was a lucky recipient of a sponsored Adventure Walk, thanks to Jenny and Gus!

What would your pets say your worst habit is?
I think Morgan would say my worst habit is trying to quell her crazy puppy energy.

What do your pets know about you that no one else does?
How much I listen to Paul Simon.

Common wisdom is that people look like their pets – do you and your pet look alike?
We both have a similar crazy-eyed smile, that’s our only likeness that I’m aware of.

Aside from the parks and trails around town, where do you and your pets like to hang out?
Morgan has had surgery on each of her knees in the last nine months, so we hang out at Paws to Swim, a canine physical therapy pool out in Goochland. Girl LOVES to swim.

If you were a dog, what type of dog would you be?
I have no idea!

What is the best part about your job with Canine Adventure?
I love this job. It’s sort of hard to say what’s best about it because my job is to hang out with dogs! At the river! I guess the most rewarding part of the job so far has been seeing dogs with behavioral issues progress in working those out. Whether that’s because they’re getting more exercise, or the parents have someone else working on the behavior with them, it’s nice to see a dog out having some fun, and becoming a little easier for their parents to boot!

August 25, 2011

- guest blogger, Ashley Porter VeterinarianTechnician.org If you’re seeking veterinarians for role models for your own career in animal medicine, you have plenty of individuals to choose from. This career is, in most respects, as noble a career as a physician. But, veterinarians tend to wander a bit, playing music and becoming politicians and the like. This list [...]
