Have you hugged a pit bull today? This week? Ever?
From Ring Dog Rescue:
With so many dog fighting cases pending in our local area, and the conviction of Michael Vick, the time could never be better for an event which educates the public and honors these unjustly maligned animals.
National Pit Bull Awareness Day is a concept created by a Tennessee pit bull rescue in 2007 with the intent of creating a national day on which pit bulls are celebrated versus demonized. In stark contrast to the daily abuse and victimization of these dogs, this day is intended to be a day to cherish these animals. The event has grown in support since it’s inception with 2008 being marked by 150 celebrations across the United States and even events as far away as Canada and Russia.
In celebration of National Pit Bull Awareness Day on October 23, 2010, Ring Dog Rescue is hosting a series of activities surrounding that date to celebrate these dogs. The centerpiece event of the celebration is a public event intended to provide training, insight, education and a place to network for animal welfare advocates.

There are lot of things you can do to help pit bulls in your community, not just on National Pit Bull Awareness Day, but every day! You can:
- Visit your local pit bull rescue and spend time with the dogs there awaiting adoption. Pit bulls are people dogs, and most absolutely LOVE spending time with people. Throw a ball, take a walk, groom a dog – a few minutes of your time can really make a difference.
- Donate food, blankets, beds, collars, leashes, and/or toys to your local rescue. Rescues are always in need of donated items to make the lives of the animals in their care better.
- Consider adopting a pit bull. Pit bulls can make wonderful family pets. For evidence, visit OhMyDog! and Two Pitties in the City. I challenge you to read about Miss M and Mr. B and not fall in love!
- Send a postcard – without licking a stamp, or even putting pen to paper! You can compose a message to be transcribed onto a postcard urging Mayor Hickenlooper of Denver, CO, to end Breed Specific Legislation (BSL).
Be the Change for Pitties! Spread the love! Celebrate National Pit Bull Awareness Day on October 23rd!

Oh, we love Mr. B and Miss M! Great post. BTW, $20 spay/neuters are available for bully breeds in Charleston, SC if you know anyone who is adopting a bully breed in that area. Check our post today for details.
The Road Dogs
Awesome – thanks for the info! I’ll spread the word.
Oh, it’s so great to see Mr. B on here and have a mention of the pooches! This is such a great program to help people see pitbulls are more than just victims. I don’t think we have coordinated efforts out here, but we’ll continue working on our “grassroots efforts” just getting out there and showing people what pitbulls are really like. Great post!
I just signed up to your blogs rss feed. Will you post more on this subject?
